Bulgaria’s manager delivers his verdict on Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai after facing him yesterday

Plenty of Liverpool players were in international action yesterday, with it proving to be a fruitful day for the Reds’ stars.

Darwin Nunez bagged a goal to help end Argentina’s winning streak, while Luis Diaz scored both in a turnaround win for Colombia against Alisson Becker’s Brazil.

On the other end of Nunez’s strike, it wasn’t a good moment for Alexis Mac Allister. But elsewhere Diogo Jota grabbed an assist for Portugal, while Mohamed Salah scored an incredible four goals for Egypt against Djibouti.

The final Red in action was Dominik Szoboszlai, who helped Hungary to a 2-2 draw with Bulgaria. The point ensured Hungary qualify for Euro 2024 as group winners, with Liverpool’s No.8 contributing an assist.

And speaking via Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport after the game, Bulgaria manager Ilian Iliev had some high praise for Szoboszlai.

“He’s a world-class player and he showed his skills in this game,” Iliev raved. “I believe that in the next games we can show our strengths. I told my players after the game that their fighting skills deserve praise and we have to continue to do the same against the Serbs. There are several players with similar skills to Szoboszlai playing football,”

Szoboszlai shines again

Szoboszlai may not have been the most eye-catching performer for Liverpool last night, but he still made an impact.

And as captain of his nation, it will have been a proud night for him regardless.

It follows on from the first slightly quiet period of his Liverpool career. Since joining in the summer, the 23-year-old has been one of the Reds best players up to this point.

But over the last handful of games, we haven’t seen Szoboszlai quite as involved as he had been.

Goals and assists aren’t necessarily what we mean here, that isn’t all he was brought in for. The Hungarian just doesn’t seem to be putting the same stamp on games of late.

Hopefully that little lull ends last night, with a big moment for him personally and for his country.

This isn’t the first time Szoboszlai has been called ‘world-class’ even in the last month. Liverpool teammate Harvey Elliott also bestowed the weighty description on him recently.

Up until now, the former RB Leipzig man has come to justify the praise that has come his way. But as expectations grow, we need to see him step up again. Yesterday was a good indication that he’s more than capable of doing so. Well done, Dom.
