Last night was not a good one for Argentina, with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and co on the losing side for the first time since November 2022.
Having won 14 games on the spin – two via a penalty shootout – they took on Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay in Buenos Aires.
There, their invincible streak came to an end, goals from Ronald Araujo and Nunez himself downing Lionel Scaloni’s side. After the game, Argentine outlet TyC Sports had the rare duty of assessing the Albiceleste’s players after a loss.
And unfortunately, it does not make for good reading for Liverpool’s Mac Allister. Having been taken off at half-time with his team 1-0 down, the 24-year-old is rated as a four out of ten.
Worse than that, it’s claimed that Mac Allister ‘never looked comfortable’ in midfield. Having been the subject of man-marking from Marcelo Biesla’s team, the £35m man reportedly lost the ball at every ‘slight imperfection.’
Having picked up what is now his customary yellow card, Mac Allister was replaced at the break.
Tough night for Mac Allister
Up until now, Mac Allister’s international career has been a breeze. Not only had Argentina won the last 14 games – and lifted the World Cup in that time – they hadn’t conceded a goal in eight matches.
Throughout that run, Liverpool’s No.10 has earned praise from those in his homeland. Nailing down a regular starting spot, Mac Allister even earned some comparisons to Lionel Messi last time out.
That was always going to end at some point, though. And with Macca struggling slightly at club level, it’s not a surprise to see it happen now.
Still, it’s a real shame to see that the Liverpool midfielder had such a difficult night. He will surely have been looking forward to facing his friend Nunez. It wasn’t supposed to go like this.

It’s the continuation of a slightly patchy run of form for Mac Allister, having been forced to get to grips with an unfamiliar deeper-lying role.
Although he’s often been performing the same role for Argentina, it’s still very new to him.
As he prepares to return from suspension for Liverpool against Manchester City next weekend, this doesn’t bode well at all.
Put it out of your mind and push on, Macca. Better days ahead.
