When debating the top performers for Liverpool this season, it’s hard to come to a consensus.
Whereas last season Alisson Becker was the clear standout performer, this year has seen some of his Reds teammates come to the party so far.
Mohamed Salah has carried on where he left off at the backend of 2022/23, while Darwin Nunez has been electric, too. Dominik Szoboszlai has looked an outstanding addition and Virgil van Dijk appears back to being imperious. But one man who won’t feature on many people’s lists looks like he might soon have his say: Luis Diaz.
Diaz’s season has of course been marred by the unbelievable kidnapping of his father back home in Colombia. But even before that heart-stopping turn of events, the 26-year-old had veered off course slightly.
He began the season like a house on fire. Two goals in Liverpool’s first two games suggested he was ready to put the doubts over his output to bed. Since then though, Diaz has scored just twice in 12 games.
Having seen his Dad safely returned now, the Colombian hit a double for his country against Brazil last night. Following a goal against Luton Town at the start of the month, Diaz is suddenly in good goal scoring form.
Diaz ready to hit his straps
Although he’s almost been at the club for two years now, it still feels like Diaz is yet to fully get going at Liverpool.
Having been signed for £50m from Porto in January 2022, the No.7 was initially incredible as the Reds aimed to win an unprecedented quadruple.
Diaz was superb as Liverpool won the FA and League Cups and came within a whisker of adding the Champions League and Premier League, too.
After that, with a full pre-season under his belt, the winger looked set to take English football by storm.

To be fair to him, he was very good at the start of last season, although Liverpool themselves were desperately poor. This perhaps didn’t allow us to fully appreciate the best of Diaz, before a knee injury in October ruined his campaign.
With the situation surrounding his Dad, it looked like being the latest thorn in the side of his Liverpool career – albeit one that made football completely irrelevant.
Now though, things are looking up. A goal against Luton, two against Brazil, Diaz looks ready to unleash all the frustration and anger of the past 18 months.
It’s taken a little while to get back to this point, but it now feels like Lucho is finally about to enter the conversation for Liverpool’s Player of the Season. Go get em!
