Liverpool now want to sign 23-year-old defender once dubbed the fastest player in his country

Liverpool are jostling to sign Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies next summer.

Still only 23, Davies has been one of the world’s best left-backs over the past three or four years. But with his contract having just 18 months left to run, he could soon be on the move.

And according to 90min, plenty of Europe’s top sides are on standby just in case – Liverpool being one of them.

Unfortunately though, it’s claimed that the Reds don’t believe they actually have much of a chance of signing the Canadian. Instead, Liverpool – as well as Manchester City, Chelsea, PSG and Bayern themselves – all think Davies has his heart set on joining Real Madrid.

His current club seemingly haven’t given up yet, though. It’s claimed that Bayern are still trying to tie Davies down to a new deal, but he’s reportedly shown ‘little desire to commit’ so far.’

As a result, teams such as Liverpool have been alerted. But for now, they’re said to ‘ultimately believe’ that unless anything changes dramatically, Davies is heading for the Bernabeu.

Liverpool hoping for Davies chance

If Davies really is available next summer, then Liverpool need to push as hard as possible to get him signed up.

Of course, the Reds can still count the man who Davies has most often been battling for the title of ‘best left-back in the world’ – Andy Robertson. But Robbo will be 30 in March and a succession plan is perhaps needed.

Kostas Tsimikas has shown over recent weeks and months that he cannot be the man to take Robertson’s place full-time. He’s simply not quite good enough. But Davies is.

Having remarkably only turned 23 earlier this month, the Canada international still has years ahead of him to grow.

If Liverpool can convince him of an Anfield move, they’d have the position sorted beyond Robertson’s years advancing.

It would be quite the coup for Liverpool. Fans have been urging Jurgen Klopp to sign him as far back as 2020. They would love to have a player who at 18 was deemed the ‘fastest in the Bundesliga’ by then Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic [bundesliga.com].

Since then, ‘Phonzy’s’ reputation has only grown. With five league titles and a Champions League under his belt, his time at Bayern has been punctuated by success. But it’s easy to imagine how such domestic dominance could become tiresome, and you can’t blame Davies for looking for a new challenge.

Right now, it appears that that challenge is likely to be in Madrid. If there’s any chance for Liverpool to change that though, then they absolutely must.
