Liverpool have been following the progress of Palmeiras wonderkid Luis Guilherme for a ‘long time.’

The Reds looks set to do business in Brazil this January, with Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade continuing to be linked.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Andre may not be the only player we see come direct from Brazil to Liverpool.

“Official, confirmed. Luiz Guilherme signs new long term deal until 2026 as €55m [£48m] release clause is included,” the journalist reported last night.

Bayern, Liverpool, Chelsea and more European top clubs have been following Luiz for long time.”

Liverpool tracking Luiz development

It’s about time Liverpool caught up with their rivals in terms of bringing in young South American talent.

In a post-Brexit world, the benefits of signing youngsters from the continent has become even more apparent.

But Liverpool have always held off. While Chelsea have plundered Brazil and Ecuador for some of their top prospects over the last year or so, the Reds have been nowhere to be seen. Hopefully that is now about to change.

If they do bring in Andre he won’t be quite on the same page as someone like Guilherme, though.

The 22-year-old is a more experienced player who could potentially be a starting XI option in no time at all. Guilherme on the other hand is just finding his feet, the left-footed forward has only played 26 times for Palmeiras.

Still, 26 games for 17-year-old is still not to be sniffed at. He clearly has something special.

Of course, the £48m fee looks enormous, especially when you consider that Andre is likely to cost far cheaper than that.

Unless that price comes down significantly, it’s still difficult to see Liverpool doing anything concrete here.

Nevertheless, with the Brazilian domestic season heading into its final stretch, it’s worth keeping an eye on how Guilherme does.

From online clips, he really does look like an exciting talent. Nice to see Liverpool at least having a look what’s out there.
