‘Very impressed’: Pundit says 20-year-old Liverpool youngster was absolutely everywhere vs Toulouse

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott was a real bright spark during last night’s win over Toulouse.

Thursday evening was a wholly positive one for the Reds, as they dismantled the French side 5-1. Five different goal-scorers and a few youngsters out on show. What’s not to love.

Amidst the likes of Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon getting a run out though, LFCTV pundit Gary Gillespie claimed another Liverpool youngster’s performance shouldn’t be overlooked.

“I was very impressed with Harvey Elliott all night,” raved the former Reds player. “I thought he worked his socks off, showed some really nice touches as well. I think he brings a little bit of a spark, a little bit of an energy.”

Elliott brings the energy

Just as he has all season, Elliott looked positive, bright and full of beans against Toulouse.

After an excellent cameo in Saturday’s derby against Everton, the 20-year-old was deserving of a start. And he didn’t disappoint.

Throughout the past 18 months, Elliott has mainly been used as part of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield three. But last night, he reverted out to Mohamed Salah’s right-wing spot.

It was a reminder of the former Fulham youngster’s versatility, and although he’s no Salah, Elliott showed how he can be effective in that role.

At times, it can be hard to remember that Liverpool’s No.19 is still barely 20. It isn’t even that Elliott has been around since he’s been 15. The young man simply plays with a maturity belying his years.

After a slightly tricky first full season in the senior side last year, Elliott will have learnt so much.

He could have sat and sulked after a campaign that probably didn’t pan out as he had expected. But instead, the England U21 international rolled his sleeves up and cracked on.

Given his obvious technical ability, Elliott’s workrate is often something that gets overlooked. But thankfully Gillespie has pointed it out.

When you match the kind of technique Harvey has with a determination to work hard for the team, you end up with one heck of a player. And that’s what we’ve got here.

Keep working, Harvey, it doesn’t go unnoticed.
