Jurgen Klopp has been keen to run the rule over youngster Luke Chambers in senior training for Liverpool.

Chambers initially caught the eye during the Reds pre-season tour in 2022. Having since had a productive loan spell at Kilmarnock, the 19-year-old is now a genuine option to cover for the injured Andy Robertson.

And according to The Athletic, Chambers is indeed ‘under consideration’ for some game time with the first-team. As it turns out, the teenager has been earmarked as one to watch for quite some time.

It’s claimed that having seen him do well in the summer of 2022, Klopp subsequently wanted to see how Chambers got on in training up against Mohamed Salah.

With a loan offer on the table in January, there is said to have been ‘indecision’ at letting the left-back go. Nevertheless, Chambers went and having been described as ‘outstanding’ by Killie manager Derek McInnes [Kilmarnock FC Twitter], he also reportedly received ‘positive reports’ upon his return to Liverpool.

This is claimed to have led to hope in the academy that the youngster would be afforded more time with the senior team this season.

That possibility was reportedly almost scuppered, with a ‘host’ of teams said to have been willing to take Chambers on-loan. But keen to ‘look at him closely,’ Liverpool supposedly told any and all comers that the defender was not for sale. In the months since, Chambers is said to have been training regularly with the first-team.

Chambers catching Klopp’s eye

It has been noteworthy the amount of times Klopp and Pep Lijnders have mentioned Chambers publicly, despite only recently making his debut.

It’s clear that the coaches at Liverpool hold the young man in incredibly high regard.

With that in mind, Robertson’s injury has actually given them the perfect opportunity to get a much more in-depth look at Chambers.

For the moment, the only reason he may not feature in tomorrow’s game against Toulouse is perhaps injury. A small issue over the international break could yet scupper his chances.

But if he is fit, then you’d imagine Chambers will be given the nod against the French side.

Fellow academy youngster Calum Scanlon also appears to be in the running. But as the more senior option, Chambers should be slightly ahead.

From there, how far he goes is really up to the player himself. Robertson’s injury means that the door is currently wide open. If he gets the shirt and does well tomorrow, keeping Chambers at Anfield this season will start to look like a very good decision.
