What RB Leipzig are now saying about Fabio Carvalho returning to Liverpool in January

Liverpool forward Fabio Carvalho has been struggling to make an impact on-loan at RB Leipzig.

After nine Bundesliga matches, Carvalho has started just once, accumulating 118 minutes across five games. The 21-year-old has failed to play a minute of three Champions League fixtures and – unsurprisingly – has not troubled the scoring.

But according to Leipzig based journalist Guido Schafer, the German side will not return Carvalho to Liverpool in January. Speaking to liverpool.com, Schafer has explained what he’s been told about the Reds youngster.

“I asked Leipzig if it was possible that he would leave in the winter and they said, ‘No, he will stay,'” says the journalist.

“He is working hard and this is the most important thing. He is fighting for his chance.”

Leipzig standing firm on Carvalho

With Liverpool going much better in the early parts of this season, Reds fans could have been forgiven for forgetting about Carvalho.

Last year, the Portugal U21 international arrived from Fulham to much fanfare. But having drifted out of favour with Jurgen Klopp, Carvalho was barely seen at all towards the end of last campaign.

As a result, the loan move to Leipzig looked like a good one for all parties. Carvalho would be given a change of scenery away from the glare of the Liverpool spotlight, but in a team famed for applying the same tactical principles as Klopp.

With the Leipzig manager, Marco Rose, even being a former player of Jurgen’s, it seemed like a perfect fit.

But things just haven’t worked out that way. It’s still early days, but Liverpool should already be asking Leipzig just what is going on with Carvalho.

If he isn’t playing, then he may as well be back at Anfield. At least the youngster would be further acclimatising to the demands of his parent club. So, despite what Leipzig are saying for now, if things continue this way, then Liverpool should push for a return to sender.
