Jurgen Klopp has named the options at his disposal after confirming Andy Robertson is set for a lengthy spell out.

Klopp admitted during his pre-Everton press conference today that Robertson is due to have surgery on a dislocated shoulder.

“The decision we go towards is surgery,” said the Liverpool manager. “There was a little chance he could try without, but talking to experts it looks like surgery will be the best thing for the long-term, definitely.

“That means he’s out for a while. Don’t know exactly how long but shoulder surgery is not an easy one.”

As a result, Kostas Tsimikas will deputise for Robertson while he recovers. But Klopp says Liverpool have other options beyond the Greek, too.

“Thank God it’s not only Kostas we have or for the amount of games we have we would already be a bit short,” said the German. “But we have Joe Gomez who can play the position, we have Luke Chambers and other young boys who show up in training quite frequently. We had them in the international break training week until yesterday when the boys were not in yet. You see the other boys showing up and that’s good. There’s a lot of talent in there.

“Kosti is definitely the most experienced in the position but he cannot play all the games from now on. So we need other options and we have to make sure we can use all of them.”

Chambers ready for first-team chance

Even without Robertson’s injury, Chambers had been pushing for a chance in the first-team.

The 19-year-old was excellent as far back as pre-season 2022 and subsequently excelled up in Scotland with Kilmarnock.

As a result, Bayer Leverkusen reportedly wanted to sign him this summer, with Liverpool doing well to hang onto the youngster.

This season has already been a good one for Chambers. It may have only been a short cameo, but he made his senior debut against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup last month.

Now, providing he recovers from a knock of his own, the England U19s star should get his full debut next week against Toulouse.

From there, Liverpool fans will really be able to see what kind of a player they’ve got.

As ever in football, an injury is difficult to digest at first, especially one to as important a player as Robertson. But these are the moments young players have to grasp their chance to shine. For Chambers, that moment is here.
