Chris Sutton says 24-year-old Liverpool player has really caught his eye this season

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has made an ‘impressive’ start to his Reds career.

Mac Allister has started every one of Liverpool’s eight Premier League games so far, quietly keeping things ticking along.

And although he’s had to play much of the campaign in an unfamiliar deeper-lying role, BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has praised the Argentine, along with fellow new-boy Dominik Szoboszlai.

With the help of both players, Sutton has backed Liverpool to come out on top against Everton tomorrow.

“Everton’s overall record against Liverpool is pretty wretched, with one win home or away since 2010, and I can’t see much changing this time,” says the former Celtic striker.

“I don’t think the Reds will run away with it but I’ve been very impressed by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister in their midfield, and they have got so many talented attackers. It just feels like they will be too strong for the Toffees.

“Liverpool have beaten Everton by two goals at Anfield in each of the past two seasons, so I am going to go with that same scoreline. I would have gone with a goal for Everton but my daughter is telling me 2-0 again, so I am going to listen to her.”

Sutton impressed by Mac Allister

Next to Szoboszlai, some might have been a little underwhelmed by Mac Allister so far.

The Hungarian has been eye-catchingly good, blasting in screamers in-front of the Kop and drawing comparisons to the great Steven Gerrard.

Mac Allister hasn’t been doing that. But, quietly, he has been effective for the Reds.

It’s true that the 24-year-old seems to be playing better for his country than his club right now, but he’s still getting used to Liverpool.

Any analysis of Mac Allister must also mention that he’s not playing in his natural position at the moment.

While he seems set to continue as a No.6 for the time being, that probably isn’t where his longer-term future at Anfield will be.

So, all things told, we’ve been impressed by Mac Allister, too. But as he settles in and gets more used to what’s expected of him, we think he’s got so much more in the tank.
