Gary Lineker has admitted that he’s been ‘very impressed’ with Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai recently.

Szoboszlai underlined his terrific start for the Reds with a thunderbolt against Leicester City on Wednesday evening.

And speaking on the The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said that he’d been enjoying watching the ‘new Steven Gerrard.’

“Talk about sorting their midfield out, Szoboszlai has been getting rave reviews,” said the pundit.

“I’ve been very impressed with him when he’s played. Liverpool fans are talking the ‘new Steven Gerrard.'”

Shearer echoes Lineker praise

Picking up from Lineker, Alan Shearer went even further in his praise for Liverpool’s new £60m signing.

“It sometimes take players time to settle, not this guy, he looks the real deal straight away,” raved the former England striker. “Everything about his game, everything you need from a midfielder. He looks a class act.

“I know it’s very early, probably too early to mention him in the same breath as Steven Gerrard, but what a great start he’s had to his career at Liverpool.”

It definitely is too early to mention Szoboszlai as being the heir to Gerrard’s long vacated throne. But that hasn’t stopped plenty of people from doing so.

Although the 22-year-old seems to be a young man of real confidence, those kinds of comparisons aren’t going to be helpful for him.

Things have indeed been going brilliantly since Szoboszlai rocked up at Anfield at the start of July. He’s a young player though, things will get a little bumpy at some point. When they do, those Gerrard comparisons are likely to weigh a little heavy.

We’re fully backing Dom to to be a success in his own right at Liverpool, but let him be his own man. No one will ever match Stevie, but Szoboszlai looks set to carve out his own legacy at the club.
