Liverpool reportedly had scouts in attendance this week to watch Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen, who is being lined up as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
According to the Mirror, Jurgen Klopp sent Liverpool officials out to Portugal to keep tabs on the Napoli forward, who has been identified as a potential successor to Salah at Anfield.
Despite only playing for an hour over the entire international break after picking up an injury, Liverpool sending scouts to watch the Nigerian superstar is an interesting transfer development.
Labelled as a ‘frightening attacker’ by the Analyst, Osimhen is comfortably one of the best strikers in the world having led Napoli to the Serie A title last year in some style.
However, whilst Osimhen would be an insane signing for Liverpool, the forward’s inability to play out wide makes him an odd choice to replace Salah in the squad.
Moreover, Napoli’s demands for Osimhen will make the deal an impossible one for the Reds to complete, with the Italian champions issuing a £150m asking fee for their star forward.
Liverpool’s pursuit for Osimhen makes zero sense
Replacing Salah will be one of the biggest tasks Liverpool take on in the transfer market in some years, and Osimhen simply isn’t the answer.
With the Reds already having a top centre-forward in their ranks in Darwin Nunez, signing Osimhen would do little but create unnecessary competition in the attacking area.
A natural winger is needed to replace Salah, and that is something Osimhen clearly isn’t, with the Nigerian international an out-and-out centre-forward.
