Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has been praised for his performance for Hungary yesterday.
As always, Szoboszlai captained his nation, this time leading them in a 2-2 comeback draw against Lithuania. The point leaves Hungary on the verge of qualification for Euro 2024.
Although the result and performance don’t appear to have been brilliant for the Magyars, Nemzeti Sport single Szoboszlai out as the star man.
They claim that Liverpool’s No.8 was the author of ‘clever passes’ as he tried to rouse his team from going 2-0 behind. Described as being ‘venturing’ with the ball, Szoboszlai is also said to have been ‘carved and feared,’ whatever they may mean.
In the end, the £60m man’s hard work paid off. Having brought Hungary level with what Nemzeti Sport call a ‘mercilessly’ taken penalty, Szoboszlai then laid on an assist for Barnabas Varga to level the score. A 7/10 for Dom and according to his country’s press, the best player on the pitch.
Szoboszlai makes his mark
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who is even remotely familiar with Szoboszlai’s game. The man is a machine.
Already quite obviously his country’s star player, the way the Liverpool midfielder sticks his team on his back is incredibly impressive.
At just 22, this quality is surely only going to grow in Szoboszlai as the years pass.
The former RB Leipzig man has already seen plenty of slightly unhelpful Steven Gerrard comparisons come his way since joining Liverpool. But this talismanic nature couldn’t be more Gerrard-esque.
With Jurgen Klopp possessing several more match-winners in his squad, Szoboszlai shouldn’t always need to perform these rescue acts for the Reds.
But if needs be, how good is it to know that he’s there, ready to roll his sleeves up and pull the team through.
Hungary will surely now qualify for next summer’s Championships. It will be a better tournament for having Szoboszlai in it. We’re lucky, lucky people to have this fella in our ranks.
