Conor Coady has noted how interesting it was for England to name Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder rather than a defender.
Speaking on the Monday Night Club, the Leicester City centre-back spoke about how the Three Lions squad announcements had the 25-year-old fullback listed as a midfielder instead of a defender.
Gareth Southgate has taken Jurgen Klopp’s experimentation with Alexander-Arnold as a central player to new heights by playing the Liverpool star in midfield straight from the start.

And the results speak for themselves, with Alexander-Arnold thriving in the role and being one of England’s best players in 2023 ahead of next summer’s Euros.
And for Coady, Alexander-Arnold playing midfield for England should become commonplace, with the defender saying: “I think what’s an interesting sign is when the squad goes out, he’s in the midfielders.
“When you look at when the squad goes out on social media channels, he is always within the midfielders. It’s a really interesting one. I would assume he [Southgate] has a massive say in it.”
Alexander-Arnold can lead England to glory in midfield

Alexander-Arnold becoming a central midfielder is starting to become a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’, and the positional change could be key for England next summer.
The Three Lions are one of the early tournament favourites for Euro 2024, and if Southgate is smart, he will realise that a midfield three featuring Alexander-Arnold could be game-changing.
Indeed, the Liverpool star has flourished in the role ever since taking up the mantle earlier this year for England, and Alexander-Arnold will be key in England winning their first piece of silverware since 1966.
