Darwin Nunez continued his good season so far with a reasonable display for Uruguay last night.

The 24-year-old has been in impressive form for Liverpool, grabbing four goals and three assists in 10 games so far.

And Darwin added another to that last night, firing home an injury-time penalty to secure Uruguay a 2-2 draw against Colombia. His performance – and penalty in particular – were praised by Uruguayan outlet El Observador after the game.

They claim that Nunez ‘starred’ in his country’s opening goal, forcing a good save from Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

From then on, the Liverpool striker ‘appeared in the best moments for Uruguay,’ before ‘executing very well’ from the spot. Surprisingly given what’s written about him, Nunez only scores a six out of ten from the newspaper. Nevertheless, it sounds like an all-round solid display from our No.9.

Nunez scores again

After a mixed season last time out, Nunez has started his second campaign at Liverpool in much better fashion.

Looking more settled, happier and comfortable, the former Benfica man now seems ready to make good on his enormous potential.

For his country too, it’s time that Nunez took on a greater role. With Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani well into their thirties, the Liverpool striker is now Uruguay’s main man.

Until now, Darwin has been very much living in the two legendary forward’s shadows. Indeed, last night’s penalty was just his fourth goal in 19 caps. That record is going to have to improve.

Thankfully, Nunez looks like he’s stepping up in that respect. He didn’t score during September’s break, but did manage an assist against Chile and was described as being Uruguay’s best player that day.

As he assumes greater responsibility, this is only going to help his displays at Liverpool, too.

It’s promising to be a very good season for Nunez. Let’s hope he can kick on once again when Uruguay take on Brazil next week. Perhaps he’ll have to beat a certain Liverpool teammate that day to score again, though.
