Luis Suarez has given Darwin Nunez his blessing to wear the no. 9 shirt for Uruguay, with the Liverpool legend granting the striker’s wish.
Speaking to ESPN Uruguay, the Anfield attacker revealed that he asked the now-Gremio forward if he could take his shirt for the national team for the September international break.
Suarez was not named in Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad, meaning Nunez is expected to lead the line for the South American giants this month against Chile and Ecuador.

And the Liverpool forward has now revealed that Suarez has given him his blessing to wear his no. 9 shirt, with Nunez the most natural replacement for the Anfield icon.
Nunez said: “I spoke with Luis Suarez and told him that I wanted to play with the no. 9 shirt and that I wanted to try to do my best, as he did.

“I admire him a lot and for me he was a very important piece in the national team and during the World Cup, because he helped me a lot. He wanted me to represent 9 well. I asked him for it and he said yes.”
Nunez can make Suarez proud for both Liverpool and Uruguay

Suarez remains a legend at Liverpool having made a name for himself as one of the best attackers in the 21st century on Merseyside, and Nunez will hope to replicate the striker’s accolades at Anfield.
With the 24-year-old starting the new season in fantastic form, Nunez is finally starting to look like the player many expected the former Benfica man to become with Liverpool.
And the striker will want to also impress on the international stage, with Nunez now set to become Uruguay’s main man up top for many years to come.
