Jesse Marsch shares what Dominik Szoboszlai’s agent text him the day he signed for Liverpool

The agent of Dominik Szoboszlai made sure he text former manager Jesse Marsch on the day his client joined Liverpool.

Szoboszlai has been a revelation at Anfield since signing in early July. Taking the No.8 shirt, the 22-year-old is already drawing comparisons with the great Steven Gerrard.

And speaking to This Is Anfield, Marsch – who managed Szoboszlai at both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg – says moving to a club like Liverpool was all part of the plan for Dom.

“I got a note from his agent the day he signed for Liverpool and he said, ‘This was our vision from day one and you helped Dominik get there,’” says the American coach.

“Szobo always had this belief in himself and this vision that he would be playing for the biggest clubs in the world and be the best player in those teams.”

Marsch makes Haaland comparison

As well as noting what was sent to him on what was a huge day for Szoboszlai, Marsch also spoke a little about the Hungarian’s unwavering self-confidence.

“This is all part of the manifestation of his confidence and his belief in himself. Some people may look at it as arrogance but Erling [Haaland] is the same,” he explains. “It’s interesting because Erling and Szobo had a really good relationship in Salzburg and, I think, learned a lot from each other.

“But I could see from both of them that they were going to be among the best players in the world because of their enthusiasm, their talent, their belief, their commitment, their work ethic, their desire to improve.

“The vision they had for themselves was different to most players. I don’t think that will ever be an issue for Szobo.”

Of course, it’s one thing to have immense confidence in your own ability. It’s another thing entirely to follow through with that belief and show that it’s warranted.

So far, Haaland has obviously made good on that. Ever since he burst onto the scene alongside Szoboszlai at Salzburg, he looked destined to be a great player. The years since have only underlined just how good the Norwegian can become.

For Szobo, he’s still yet to reach anything like those heights.

He’s obviously made an incredibly good start at Liverpool, but that’s all it is – a start. The Hungary captain doesn’t strike you as someone who will rest on his laurels, though. As he settles ever further into life at Liverpool, it would be a brave person to bet against him showing exactly why he always backed himself with such conviction.
