Former reported Liverpool target Federico Valverde is set to sign a new contract at Real Madrid.

Although a deal for Valverde always felt unlikely from a Reds point of view, that didn’t stop the Uruguayan being regularly linked throughout the summer.

After news today though, that will surely come to an end. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Valverde’s new deal will see a release clause of around £863m inserted into it.

“Real Madrid have agreed terms of Fede Valverde new deal — contract now ready until June 2028,” Romano reports.

“€1B [£863m] release clause confirmed, as called by Tiempo de Juego. Agreement done. Valverde, Camavinga, Vinicius Jr and all the other announcements will be made soon.”

Valverde set to sign new contract

Having signed four midfielders in the summer, it still seems as though Liverpool are on the lookout for one more to complete their rebuild.

The 24-year-old was perhaps never really on it anyway, but we can now definitively cross his name off that particular Reds’ list.

Just because he has a ridiculous release clause obviously doesn’t mean a team would have to pay close to that to get Valverde. But the new contract is a sign of just how important he now is to Real Madrid.

Unless something drastic happens over the next few months, there’s no way he’s leaving any time soon.

That won’t bother Liverpool fans too much. Although he’d be pretty perfect in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield, he was never a realistic target.

Instead, the Reds look primed to go after Andre Trindade – a player with a manageable value who could reach a much higher level.

Signing ready-made superstars like Valverde has never been the Liverpool way. After this update, that still doesn’t look like changing.
