Fabrizio Romano says £77m midfielder will definitely not be joining Liverpool now

Liverpool will absolutely not be signing Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde during this summer’s transfer window.

There had been some rumours that Liverpool were plotting a move for Valverde, after Jude Bellingham’s arrival in Madrid. The Uruguayan looks to be the perfect fit for what Jurgen Klopp needs right now.

Speaking on his YouTube channel last night, journalist Fabrizio Romano addressed the rumours. Unfortunately for Reds fans, it isn’t good news.

“For Fede Valverde, many questions,” Romano began. “I don’t know where these rumours are coming from, but I’m told that Fede Valverde is 100 per cent in Real Madrid’s plans and Real Madrid have no plans to let him go.

“So, Valverde and Real Madrid plan to continue together despite rumours of Liverpool or any other club.”

Valverde dream not coming true

There is no great surprise in this. The stories linking Valverde to Liverpool were never coming from those who tend to be in the know.

If Romano, for example, starts changing his tune, then we might start to think there might be something in it. But for now, the prospect of the 24-year-old swapping the Bernabeu for Anfield seems to be purely a fantasy.

We’ll perhaps forgive those who’ve been peddling the story though, as he really would be a superb addition. Physical, versatile, technical, capable of scoring goals – Valverde has everything a modern day midfielder needs.

Right now, Jordan Henderson is often being asked to do a lot of those things at Liverpool. He needs to play right central midfield, right wing and a number 10 role all in one.

With the greatest of respect to the captain, who does his job well, he’s not the ideal man for that position. Valverde really could be.

For a reported fee of around £77m he’d be a huge signing. But that also looks like something of a steal for a player of his age and potential.

We’d still be minded to keep an eye on the Uruguay international’s situation at Madrid. With such a stacked midfield he may suddenly find himself out of the team, or continually playing out of position. Valverde’s that good he’d be worth waiting for. At the moment though, it’s time to let this one go. He’s not coming to Liverpool.
