Liverpool think that they’ve got a young player who can follow in the footsteps of Ben Doak.
Doak has had a meteoritic rise at Liverpool having signed from Celtic last summer. Still only 17, the Scotsman is now a fully-fledged member of Jurgen Klopp’s first-team.
His development from 16-year-old to senior squad member in less than a year has been incredible. And according to The Athletic, Liverpool believe they may have another player who could do the same.
They claim that there are ‘high hopes’ that 17-year-old Trent Kone-Doherty can develop into a first-team player in the way Doak has done.
The teenager scored on his Liverpool U21s debut in August, and bagged a hat-trick for the U18s in his most recent match on Saturday. One to watch.
High hopes for Kone-Doherty
Liverpool’s recruitment at academy level has been absolutely spot-on in recent years.
Doak – and perhaps Kone-Doherty – are just the latest to have made a splash after being brought to the club from elsewhere.
Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bajcetic, Kaide Gordon and Bobby Clark are other examples of times when Liverpool have snapped up top young talent.
They look to have done the same with Amara Nallo and in particular Trey Nyoni this summer.
Having now been at Anfield for more than a year, Kone-Doherty is clearly making a big impression on staff at Kirkby, too.
The Irishman was labelled ‘unbelievable’ by the president of former club Derry City [The Athletic], and is clearly a very special talent.
Patience should be exercised, though. Not every youngster develops at the same rate. Doak shouldn’t be used as a yard-stick for Kone-Doherty. But maybe we’ll soon have another Trent for Jurgen to pick from.
