Liverpool are starting to get excited over the potential of 16-year-old academy midfielder Trey Nyoni.
Nyoni is a new signing at Anfield, having been brought in from Leicester City over the summer. It hasn’t taken the youngster long to get people talking though, he looks like a real prospect already.
And according to The Athletic, there’s a growing sense within Liverpool that they’ve got a player on their hands.

It’s claimed that before opting to join the Reds this summer, ‘every top club in the country’ was vying for Nyoni’s signature. The youngster is reportedly seen as being one of the best midfielders of his age in the UK.
And having won that particular race, Liverpool are now seeing exactly why the England U17 star is so highly rated. Having scored a hat-trick in a friendly during pre-season, Nyoni has started the campaign with a goal each in the opening three matches. No wonder staff are getting excited over his prospects.
Nyoni causing excitement at Liverpool
It’s important not to get too carried away when assessing the potential of academy players. Especially at a club like Liverpool.
The standards needed to make it into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team are extraordinarily high. It’s hard enough for young stars to break through anywhere, but at Anfield, it’s even more difficult.
Nevertheless, there is a pathway there for players like Nyoni. There’s a reason the midfielder chose the Reds over a presumably long list of suitors.

Ben Doak showed last season that good performances in the underage sides will be rewarded. If Nyoni continues in this way, it won’t be long before he’s a fixture in the U21s.
From there, the jump to catching Klopp’s eye for first-team training and potential involvement in matchday squads isn’t a huge one.
So, although caution must be exercised, fans and staff alike would be right to be quietly excited over Nyoni.
Liverpool are of course well-stocked in midfield for the moment. But there’s always room for a breakthrough star from the academy. For the moment, it looks like this young man could be the next on the list.
