Graeme Souness has named the three players who made up the best midfield of Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club.

The Reds currently have a new-look middle of the pitch, with four additions being brought in over the summer.

But according to Souness’ column in The Daily Mail, the best midfield unit of Klopp’s reign includes three players who have now left the club.

“I now see a midfield who are more skilled, extremely technically gifted, and yet still have the high work-rate of their predecessors,” began the former Liverpool captain.

“The best midfield in the eight years Klopp has been at the club consisted of Gigi Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and James Milner. That unit was extremely aggressive; constantly putting the opposite midfield under pressure to hurry and misplace their passes.”

As Souness points out, Liverpool’s midfield right now are perhaps all individually better than the names he mentions.

But as a unit, and individually too to be fair, they are yet to hit the heights of Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum.

That trio may not have had the finesse and technical qualities of the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai or Alexis Mac Allister, but they still won it all with Liverpool.

Nevertheless, we would actually dispute Souness’ claims here. While Milner was a great player for Liverpool, he wasn’t a regular starter in midfield during the Reds’ most successful periods under Klopp.

So, while Henderson and Wijnaldum are, for the moment, fairly indisputable, we’d strongly argue that it’s actually Fabinho who should complete this trio.

The Brazilian dropped off markedly last year before being sold to Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. But prior to that, Fabinho barely put a foot wrong in fours years.

His dependability in an incredibly important role was one of the big reasons Liverpool were as good as they were. There are signs that one or two of the current crop may sneak into this in the years to come, but for now, Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum can’t be beaten.
