Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has ranked Alexis Mac Allister as the third best Argentine to ever play in English football.
Mac Allister became the sixth Argentinian to turn out for Liverpool having signed from Brighton for a measly £35m this summer. And according to Romero, the Reds have bought themselves one heck of a player.
Asked to name his top countrymen to have played in England by Amazon Prime Video Sport on TikTok, the Spurs man went for some interesting picks.

At number five, Romero kept his Tottenham hat on to select legendary midfielder Ossie Ardiles. Next, and somewhat amazingly, the centre-back picked Manchester City icon Sergio Aguero.
Now, Aguero may be the fifth highest Premier League scorer of all time, but according to Romero, he’s no match for Mac Allister, who slots into third. We’re not arguing, but that’s some hefty praise.
The 25-year-old then selects Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez as his runner-up, before crowning Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez as the king.
Topping off a slightly bizarre list, Romero hails Martinez as ‘by far the best defender in the world.’ Excuse me?!
Romero makes Mac Allister choice
We’re not going to argue too much with any rankings list that puts Liverpool players past or present ahead of Man City legends. But this is quite the take from Romero.
Let us just say that we love Mac Allister as much as the next guy. The 24-year-old has slotted in perfectly at Liverpool so far and we can’t wait to see where his legacy at Anfield goes.
But to suggest that he’s reached anything like the levels of Aguero is – in a footballing sense – just plain wrong.

And for that matter, it’s tough to take a list that contains Martinez as ‘by far’ the best defender in the world seriously.
‘The Butcher’ has been a decent enough signing for United since arriving last summer, but he isn’t anything like as good as Romero suggests.
Instead, we’d like to put forward another player who should have been in and around this conversation – Javier Mascherano. The former Liverpool midfielder was one of the best around in his days at Anfield and should be right up there.
But if you’re asking us, Aguero is undisputedly number one here. In time though, let’s hope Macca can make his position in this list more justifiable.
