Liverpool were really interested in signing Levi Colwill this summer, before he signed a new Chelsea contract.

The Reds were heavily linked with Colwill for much of the transfer window. With his future at Chelsea looking uncertain, the young defender was potentially on the market.

And with Liverpool keen to add a centre-back to their ranks, the Liverpool ECHO report that the 20-year-old was the target.

They claim that the Reds were after a young player to fill the left-side of their defence. Colwill was the man they’d earmarked.

However, after a will-he-won’t-he saga at Chelsea, the England youngster eventually signed a contract to stay at Stamford Bridge. According to the ECHO, this all-but ended Liverpool’s interest.

Colwill contract ended interest

For the time being, Colwill’s decision to stay at Chelsea looks to have been vindicated.

Having impressed during a spell at Brighton last season – manager Roberto De Zerbi called him ‘fantastic’ [The Argus] – the defender has slotted straight into Mauricio Pochettino’s first team.

Four games in, Colwill has actually played every minute of the league campaign so far for the Blues. He also started their Carabao Cup second round tie against Wimbledon.

Had he moved to Liverpool, there’s a chance that he’d have got some minutes already, too. Ibrahima Konate’s injury and Virgil van Dijk’s suspension have opened up the door somewhat.

But by and large he’d be playing third or fourth fiddle to Liverpool’s more senior defenders.

Of course, we know that things can move quickly at Chelsea, though. With the team in some disarray on the pitch, changes could be afoot.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Colwill is a casualty of Benoit Badiashile returning from injury, for example. There’s still a chance things take a turn for Colwill at Chelsea. Liverpool will likely be back if they do.
