Trent Alexander-Arnold has said that he was shocked when he found out he was Liverpool’s new vice-captain after Jurgen Klopp told him mid-training.

Speaking to the Athletic, the England international revealed that he wasn’t expecting to be named vice-captain, with Alexander-Arnold taking the role as Virgil van Dijk was named Liverpool skipper.

Alexander-Arnold said: “At first I thought he was going to tell me to stop giving the ball away. It was a lovely surprise to be honest, not one I was expecting at that moment. It was special. A moment I will remember.”

Despite Alexander-Arnold’s age, many fans have agreed with the decision to make the 24-year-old Liverpool’s vice-captain, with the defender one of the most experienced players in the entire squad.

Moreover, Alexander-Arnold being a homegrown player and a local hero gives the appointment more weight, and sends a clear message to academy players that anything is possible at Liverpool.

Indeed,Alexander-Arnold being named Liverpool’s vice-captain feels like a symbolic move from Klopp ahead of the new season, and the defender could be perfect for the role.

Van Dijk was clearly the perfect choice to be named Liverpool skipper when it became clear that Jordan Henderson was leaving Anfield. Yet the decision to name Alexander-Arnold as vice-captain could be even better.

As we know, Alexander-Arnold is a boyhood Red and one of the best defenders on the planet, and at the age of 24, the fullback is only going to get better.

Now with the added responsibility of being vice-captain, Alexander-Arnold could see his game hit new levels in the upcoming season, where the fullback could wear the armband on multiple occasions.
