Dominik Szoboszlai has shared the instructions given to him by Jurgen Klopp before his Liverpool debut last night.

The 22-year-old was in the Reds starting XI for the very first time yesterday, playing the opening 45 minutes of the 4-2 win over Karlsruher SC.

It was an impressive run-out for Szoboszlai, who looked to fit seamlessly into the midfield. And speaking to Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport after the game, the £60m signing shared what his new manager had said to him prior to the match.

“I didn’t get any special instructions,” said Liverpool’s No.8. “He told me what the players in my position had to do and what we had to do if we slipped away, so to speak.

“I think we executed well what he asked us to do, but it was only our first training game and that’s hardly how we will play in our first Premier League game.”

The first game of pre-season is always an exciting one for fans. But yesterday really did feel like the dawn of a new era at Liverpool.

As well as the enjoyable displays from the likes of Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, news also broke during the match that Jordan Henderson is on the verge of leaving.

In some ways, that only made the sight of Liverpool’s new midfielders all the more exciting.

Their roles in Klopp’s new-look Reds team were always going to be big. But now that the captain – as well as Fabinho – are virtually certain to leave, the pair are going to take on even greater significance.

For Szoboszlai in particular, he looks like he’s going to relish that. You can already see that the Hungary national team captain is absolutely not fazed by anything.

That nerve-lessness oozes into his game. He’s ice cool on the ball. We’re going to have a lot of fun with him, no doubt about that.

There’s also no question that as he grows into his position, Klopp’s instructions will become a little more complex. But for an opening night, Szoboszlai did exactly what his manager asked of him. Exciting times ahead.
