Bayern Munich may have to sell Ryan Gravenberch to fund a move for Harry Kane, with Liverpool interested in the midfielder.

The Reds have been linked with a move for Gravenberch all summer long. With Fabinho now unexpectedly on the way out, the Dutchman has even been mooted as a potential replacement.

But Bayern’s position has seemingly been clear up to this point: he’s not for sale. As hope of striking a deal has slipped away, Liverpool have moved onto other targets. But now, journalist Christian Falk has told GiveMeSport that a shift in strategy from the German champions could be about to happen.

“They [Liverpool] are interested. There were talks in the past. But they got feedback that Bayern Munich currently don’t want to sell,” Falk explains. “But this could change because, last Saturday, training started at Bayern Munich and there will be competition. Leon Goretzka, the German international, is playing in the same position. So, Thomas Tuchel can decide who will be his first choice.

“After that, Bayern will have to sell players because if they want Harry Kane, he’ll be expensive. So, this could be a topic in the next few weeks.

“Currently, Bayern Munich will see everybody in training, including Goretzka and Gravenberch. Marcel Sabitzer was also at the medical test. They must sell if they want to get money from a club. In this case, it can be interesting. Gravenberch’s management has already held talks with AC Milan. There was also a meeting in Amsterdam about how they plan the future. So, this topic is still hot.”

Liverpool given Gravenberch hope

If Gravenberch does end up being brought in by Liverpool, there’ll likely be a bit of a mixed reception.

The 21-year-old is clearly a very talented player. You don’t come through the academy to play first team football at Ajax as a teenager if you’re not. Dutch legend Ruud Gullit called Gravenberch ‘wonderful’ [Sport Buzzer] and he’s had plenty of other praise besides.

But the fact is that he’s struggled in Munich. Faced with joining a huge club in a new country, Gravenberch hasn’t looked up to the task. Should he rock up at Anfield between now and September 1st, he’d be asked to do exactly that yet again.

And if Liverpool do end up losing Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, there’s going to be huge pressure on Gravenberch to deliver.

From what we’ve seen of him over the past 12 months, he doesn’t look a safe bet to make that step up.

Having said that, Gravenberch is still just 21. Jurgen Klopp seems to be confident that the Netherlands international has the right tools to be a success at Liverpool, and that will be good enough for plenty of supporters.

At the end of the day, it all may come down to availability. The landscape looks set to shift in the Reds’ favour in that regard. Let’s see if they’re willing to do anything about it.
