Liverpool have reportedly failed to step up in their pursuit to sign Sofyan Amrabat, with Manchester United now in the driving seat to land the midfielder.

According to Daily Mail+, departures from the Red Devils could free up funds and space in the squad for Erik Ten Hag to move for the Morocco international, who could leave Tuscany this summer for as little as £25m amid United’s growing interest.

As per the report, three midfielders are available for transfer on United’s books, and Liverpool’s lack of action in moving for Amrabat could now see the Manchester giants beat their Premier League rivals for the 26-year-old superstar.

Lauded by Jamie O’Hara as an ‘exceptional’ player, Amrabat looks ready-built for England after captivating the sport in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And United could now be the side who land the midfielder’s sought-after signature, especially with Liverpool lacking urgency.

Indeed, the Reds are in the market for a defensive midfielder with Fabinho’s proposed move to Saudi Arabia expected to go through this week. Yet it now looks clear that Liverpool aren’t chasing Amrabat, who could be inching closer to a transfer to United.

Amrabat is without question more than capable of playing for a big Premier League side after exploding onto the scene last winter in Qatar. Yet for Liverpool, missing out on the Fiorentina star won’t be as big as a blow even if it is to a rival in United.

As we know, Liverpool will soon have funds to spend big on a defensive midfielder. And although Amrabat would have been a great short-term solution, a player like Romeo Lavia might be better for Jurgen Klopp’s plans going forward.
