Liverpool plan to give Euro U21 winners Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott a little more time off this summer.

Jones and Elliott were part of the England side to win the youth tournament on Saturday. Jones in particular was impressive for England, scoring the winning goal and picking up the Man of the Match award in the final.

With the rest of their Liverpool teammates already back for pre-season, Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor has told Football Daily when the young pair will return.

“The plan for Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones is to get them in around about Sunday,” says O’Connor. “Then they will join up with the squad a little bit later on in Germany as well.

“So, things coming together. The core of that Liverpool group all together now and pre-season starts in earnest for the 14 who are back today.”

Date set for Jones and Elliott return

It’s been great to see all the content from Liverpool throughout today as the first team squad return to training.

By now, Jones, Elliott and the injured Thiago Alcantara should be the only players not preparing for the new season.

With new signings Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister now in the building, that could set that trio back a little ahead of the new campaign.

Liverpool play their first pre-season friendly next Wednesday and you’d imagine neither Jones nor Elliott will be up to speed by then.

By contrast, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister will have had a full week to begin to get Jurgen Klopp’s ideas on board. They should be primed and raring to go.

For Jones especially, this is a slight shame. The 22-year-old has had a really positive few months and looks primed to assert himself on the Liverpool squad for perhaps the first time ever. Right now, his stock at Anfield has never been higher. He could do with capitalising on that.

But if the new boys can get their feet under the table quickly, Jones may not get the chance to. Of course, Jurgen won’t forget about he and Elliott, he rates them too highly for that. Competition is stronger than ever in the midfield now though, they’ll both have to work twice as hard to catch themselves up.
