Jurgen Klopp was delighted to see Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton back at the club after a loan spell last season.

Morton has returned from a good year at Blackburn Rovers, and is expected to play a part in the Reds pre-season games over the coming weeks.

How much the 20-year-old is involved may depend on his recovery from injury, though. According to the Liverpool Echo, Morton has been working at the AXA Training Centre over the summer to shake off a problem he picked up last campaign.

Despite that, Klopp won’t have seen much of him, with the Reds boss only returning to work on Saturday. And as per the Echo, Jurgen was pleased to be reunited with Morton during yesterday’s session.

Spotting the academy graduate on the training pitches, Klopp was spotted giving him a ‘warm embrace’ before training.

Klopp welcomes Morton return

The plan for Morton next season will be interesting to see. With Liverpool going through a midfield rebuild, it could be argued that now is the perfect time for him to announce himself as a genuine option.

But on the other hand, it also feels like exactly the wrong time to start giving further chances to young players.

Liverpool need to be better next season, they simply have to be. In already bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, they’ve improved their chances of doing that.

However much Morton may have improved at Blackburn, he’s still nowhere close to that pair’s level right now.

Liverpool’s participation in next season’s Europa League should give him chances. But beyond that, you can’t imagine he’d be too high up the pecking order.

As a result, it might be better for Morton to head back out on-loan for 2023/24. He initially did well at Blackburn before fading a little as the season went on.

Another Championship or potentially a lower Premier League loan should give him the chance to develop further. Klopp is obviously a fan, calling Morton ‘incredible’ this time last year [Liverpool Echo]. But we think he just needs a little more time.
