Liverpool academy left-back Luke Chambers is courting plenty of interest in a loan move for the upcoming season.

It was coming up to this time last year when most Reds supporters first became aware of Chambers. His performances in last summer’s tour of Asia drew praise from Kostas Tsimikas and signalled his burgeoning talent.

A loan move to Kilmarnock followed for the second part of last season. And after impressing up in Scotland, The Athletic report that the 19-year-old could now take a big step in 2023/24.

Somewhat surprisingly, it’s claimed that former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is keen on taking Chambers to Bayer Leverkusen for the campaign.

Championship sides are also said to be ‘showing interest’ in the left-back. Both Sheffield Wednesday and Watford are named as two potential destinations. However, it’s Alonso and Leverkusen that will capture supporters’ imaginations.

Of course, it could yet be that Chambers ends up staying at Anfield. The Athletic report that Liverpool will ‘assess’ the youngster during pre-season before coming to a decision. At this stage though, a loan of ‘increased level of difficulty’ seems to be the most likely outcome.

Alonso looking for Chambers loan

Well, who saw this coming? Don’t get us wrong, Chambers has looked good whenever we’ve seen him. He was even called ‘outstanding’ by Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes during his time North of the border. but this would be a pretty big jump.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be quite as massive a step as heading into the Liverpool first team. But with all due respect, going from Kilmarnock to Bayer Leverkusen is still a pretty decent sized gap to bridge. If old Xabi is interested though, then Chambers must have something a bit special.

Alonso has had an excellent coaching career up to this point. The 41-year-old reinvigorated Leverkusen last season, taking them from a relegation battle to the European places.

As he embarks on his first full season in senior management, he’ll be looking to get players in who can get his ideas across.

If Chambers does end up going there, it’ll be a huge chance for the teenager. Alonso was some player and looks set to be a top manager, too.

Do well under the Spaniard’s stewardship and, who knows, it could help his Liverpool future in more ways than one. As Liverpool begin the first looks into sorting out Andy Robertson’s successor, a good season in Germany will stand Chambers in good stead to be in that conversation.

But it could also be that in Alonso, he’d be working with a man destined for the Anfield hot seat. This is one to keep an eye on.
