Liverpool are keenly aware of the progress former player Xabi Alonso is making as a manager.
Alonso has quickly become one of the hottest young managers in the game, having supercharged a flailing Bayer Leverkusen team. Taking over the Bundesliga side in October, the 41-year-old has brought them from a relegation battle into a fight for Europe.
Impressively, Alonso has also guided his team into the Europa League semi-final, where they face Roma this evening. Looking ahead to that meeting, GOAL touch on what the future may look like for the Spanish coach.

As well as recent interest from Tottenham, they claim that Liverpool are also ‘well aware’ of the success their former player is having. Although not expecting to replace Jurgen Klopp until at least 2026, the Reds reportedly know just how key finding the right successor to the German will be.
Consequently, it’s claimed that they’ll be watching Alonso ‘with interest’ over the coming years. Already hailed as ‘fantastic’ by his opponent tonight, Jose Mourinho, we suggest all Reds fans keep a watch over him, too.
Alonso making a name for himself
As of right now, Alonso should be the favourite to replace Klopp in 2026. Obviously, plenty can change between now and then. We saw that with previous favourite Steven Gerrard. The former captain now has virtually no chance of taking over at his old club.
But for what he’s done in his six months or so at Leverkusen, the football world should be excited about Alonso. During his playing career he worked with some of the very best managers of a generation. Now given the reigns for the first time, he’s putting all that into practice.

A hugely popular player during his time at Anfield, Alonso may have a feeling of unfinished business at Liverpool.
Had he not been forced out of the club by Rafael Benitez, he’d have surely stayed longer than the five years that he did. The Spaniard has been back to Anfield in the years since and retains an affinity with the club and the area.
As such, you can certainly see Alonso as the man to take over from Klopp. Classy and statesman-like, he’d bring the gravitas needed to step into the legendary boss’s shoes.
So yes, Liverpool should be keeping track of Xabi. Whether he ends up at Anfield or not will largely depend on his next move from Leverkusen. But until it becomes clear what that will be, Liverpool remain a big possibility for him.
