Fabrizio Romano makes claim about what Thiago Alcantara is about to do at Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara is fully focused on staying at Anfield for the final year of his contract.

Thiago has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent days, as he enters the last 12 months on his deal. But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 32-year-old is not planning to leave Liverpool.

“Let’s see what happens in the next weeks but as of today, I can guarantee that Thiago Alcantara is only focused on Liverpool, despite reports. Nothing else,” Romano tells CaughtOffside.

“Saudi clubs have been around but Thiago plans to stay at the club, at least at the moment. I’m sure he wants to stay as priority, approaches from Saudi are not new; it happened in May.”

That should be that, really. Unless anything changes, it looks like the Reds No.6 is sticking around. Good news.

Thiago happy at Liverpool

Anyone of a Liverpool persuasion hoping or pushing for Thiago to leave needs to have a word with themselves.

He may not be as shiny as new signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but he’s perhaps still the Reds best midfielder. When fit, it’s likely that Thiago will still be Jurgen Klopp’s go-to man for the big games.

To ship him out in the middle of a midfield rebuild, one year from the end of his contract just wouldn’t make sense.

We’ve already lost three from the midfield this summer. Having brought two in, Liverpool are already a man down on paper. They may well bring in Romeo Lavia, or someone else, but that shouldn’t be instead of Thiago.

The Spain international’s experience and nous is surely worth far more to the Reds than selling him would be. He can help the new lads bed in and will continue to support and advise youngsters like Stefan Bajcetic.

So, if Thiago is happy to stay, Liverpool should be absolutely happy to keep him. With better, hopefully more robust midfielders now around him, there should be an expectation that the former Bayern Munich man will have his workload eased. That should lead to a quality over quantity situation of when he’s on the pitch.

It still feels like there’s more to come from Thiago at Liverpool. With a refreshed squad and a re-energised Klopp, let’s give him a good tilt at adding a league title in a third country to his collection. Then, 12 months on and winners medals around his neck, he’ll be free to leave.
