Liverpool met with ‘phenomenal’ player’s agents more than once over the last few weeks

Liverpool have held more than one meeting with the agents of Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia recently.

Lavia has emerged as perhaps the most likely candidate to be Liverpool’s third midfield signing of the summer. A flurry of reports yesterday indicated that the Reds are about ready to make their move.

And according to French journalist Santi Aouna, that could be the case. Reporting on Twitter last night, Aouna claimed that Liverpool have had ‘several’ meetings with Lavia’s agents. Unfortunately for them though, it seems that Chelsea are right there with them.

“Chelsea have submitted a contract proposal to Romeo Lavia,” wrote the journalist. “Liverpool have met his entourage on several occasions in recent weeks. Southampton have not yet received an official offer.”

With stories of interest in Lavia from Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal now ramping up, we don’t think it’ll be long before they do.

If Liverpool are to land Lavia, then they’re going to have to battle off some fierce competition. Just like with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, the Reds aren’t the only club interested here.

Szoboszlai and Mac Allister both ultimately chose Anfield though, so there will be hope that this 19-year-old will do the same.

Certainly, the pathway is there for him under Jurgen Klopp. Lavia isn’t what we’d call a specialist defensive midfielder, but he looks to have the potential to play that role long-term.

With Klopp on the lookout for a successor for Fabinho, the Belgium international could be that man.

Should Fabinho start the new season as poorly as he did the last one, then Liverpool will need to start replacing him. With Lavia in the squad, they’d perhaps already have the perfect option to do that.

Analytics site Total Football Analysis have lauded the young Belgian as being a ‘phenomenal’ prospect. Still a teenager, the ceiling is about as high as it gets for Lavia.

That kind of talent comes at a cost, though. Southampton are said to be looking for around £50m to sell the former Manchester City midfielder. With a handful of top clubs jostling for him, maybe the race will prove a little too rich for Liverpool’s blood. Let’s see what happens next.
