Liverpool are expected to announce the signing of Hungary international Dominik Szoboszlai on Sunday.

Things have moved quickly since news first broke of Liverpool’s interest in Szoboszlai on Wednesday. Now, the man who first broke that news – The Athletic’s David Orsnstein – has given an update on when the signing will be confirmed.

Writing in The Athletic late on Saturday night, Ornstein claimed that ‘barring any hitches’ the move will be sealed in the next 24 hours.

The journalist also confirmed the fee Liverpool will pay RB Leipzig for the Hungarian. As it turns out, it won’t quite be a round £60m, there’s an extra £100,000 tagged on top.

Szoboszlai’s medical has reportedly already been completed, with a five-year deal agreed.

Liverpool set for Szoboszlai announcement

This is the news that Liverpool supporters have been waiting for all day. Now, it seems we can rest easy until tomorrow.

With the signing all-but done then, there’ll be just one question swirling in the minds of Reds all over the world: what number will he wear?

As Alexis Mac Allister alluded to when picking the No.10 shirt, there’s a few big ones available. Since Mac Allister signed, one of those big shirts has since been filled – Luis Diaz taking James Milner’s vacant No.7.

No.9 remains available, but there’s next to no chance of Szoboszlai being given that one. 15 is an option, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain now officially no longer a Liverpool player. So too is 12, a shirt last worn by Joe Gomez before his switch to No.2.

Or will our new man be so bold as to pick Steven Gerrard’s old No.8 shirt. Mac Allister didn’t want it, and it weighed particularly heavy on the last midfielder we signed from Leipzig.

It would be a real statement of intent for Szoboszlai to stride out at the AXA tomorrow with the No.8 on his back. But the 22-year-old seems like a player and a man who may relish the challenge doing just that will pose. We wouldn’t bet against it. By this time tomorrow, we’ll know for sure.

See you tomorrow, Dom!
