Arsenal forward Emile Smith Rowe was left in awe of Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott after a wondergoal for England last night.
Elliott was on target as the U21s made it three wins from three in the Euros. They beat Germany 2-0 to go through to the next round as group winners. And for Liverpool’s No.19, it was a night to remember.
Handed his first start of the tournament, Elliott was on the scoresheet inside 20 minutes. Picking up the ball from goalkeeper James Trafford, the 20-year-old slalomed his way through the German team, before firing an excellent finish across the goalkeeper.

It was a goal to really cherish, and taking to Instagram after the game, Elliott was doing just that. Posting a series of still shots from the game, Harvey was clearly proud of his night’s work.
So too, were a few of his teammates. Trafford weighed in with the tongue in cheek “how may i assist u [sic],” while Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo simply indicated that Elliott was on flames.
Arsenal’s Smith Rowe was also impressed, sending a mouth-open emoji to show his appreciation of his England colleague. Great work, Harvey!
Elliott shines for England
In all the talk of players who Liverpool may be watching at the U21 Euros, some may have forgotten that we’ve already signed up a couple of top youngsters involved.
Curtis Jones has already shown his quality during the tournament, but last night was Elliott’s turn.
The young man showed exactly why he was recently rated as the very best young prospect in the Premier League. It’s easy to forget just how much potential the Fulham academy graduate has.

Jurgen Klopp has never forgotten it. It’s clear just how much the manager rates Harvey. But even Jurgen must have been able to see that his levels dropped slightly during last season.
Whether it was fatigue from playing too much, or a lack of confidence due to poor results, Elliott seemed to fade away as the campaign went on.
With new midfielders coming into the club over the summer, it’s hard to see him anything but lower down the pecking order next year. too.
And yet, with a good summer behind him, who knows. Klopp will have been delighted – but not surprised – by what he saw last night. A few more like that and maybe Liverpool will decide they don’t need new midfielders after all…
