Liverpool could be in for 18-year-old wonderkid, but he’ll cost way more than £15m

Liverpool will have to pay far more than the release clause in Arda Guler’s contract to get him out of Fenerbahce.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who gave an update on Guler’s situation on his YouTube channel this morning. Whilst putting Liverpool’s name forward as a club who could be in the running for the 18-year-old, Romano reported that signing him will be ‘complicated.’ And not cheap, either.

“Keep an eye because this is not a traditional release clause, there are other things to clarify for Fenerbahce,” the transer guru explained. “They are still trying to speak to Arda Guler to keep the player. But also on the players side. The main problem is about the signing fee, the commission to the players side.

“It’s complicated to sign Guler because he wants to play football, he doesn’t want to go to a club where he’s on the bench. Also on the player’s side they are asking for a really important commission.

“For many clubs there is interest, every single day we hear different rumours – Milan, Liverpool, Ajax, Dortmund, Barcelona, Real Madrid, all the clubs in the world are rumoured for Arda Guler. But at the moment it’s complicated.

“The financial package is way more than the €17.5m [£15m] release clause. And also Fenerbahce are still trying their best to keep the player, to extend the contract, to keep him on-loan, to find a solution on this one.”

Guler caught in ‘complicated’ saga

This isn’t the first time Romano has attempted to explain the current situation around Guler. Over the weekend the journalist described the teenager’s situation as being ‘confused.’

It seems that while the transfer itself won’t be particularly pricey, agent fees and other costs will ramp the price up.

Nevertheless, whatever it ends up being price wise, it could still be a bargain. Guler looks like a prodigious talent and to get him for anything under £20-25m should be considered a relative bargain.

From a Liverpool point of view, they have indeed been linked with the Turkey international. But as good as he is – and may become – the Reds don’t usually wade in on these kinds of situations.

By the sounds of it, Guler’s agents will have their pick of a number of top clubs. As a result, the fees they demand are likely to only get bigger.

It’s hard to see Liverpool getting embroiled in a saga like that when they’ve got so much business to do this summer.

Regardless of that, until Guler’s situation is resolved we’d be minded to do as Romano says and ‘keep an eye’ on this. Unless things become a little clearer though, we wouldn’t expect too much from Liverpool.
