Andy Robertson says Liverpool have a really ‘gifted’ defender who could play in any position

Andy Robertson has claimed that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold could play in any position on the pitch.

Trent has seamlessly made the move from right-back into midfield for club and country in recent months. It has led to a discussion over where the 24-year-old is best suited, as Jurgen Klopp ponders where to play him next season.

Robertson has now added to that discussion. Speaking to Sky Sports yesterday, the Reds left-back claimed that Alexander-Arnold is that good, he could genuinely play anywhere.

“Trent is Trent and that’s the biggest compliment I can pay him,” said the 29-year-old. “He adapts to anything you ask of him. He’s still relatively young but he’s got a wise head on his shoulders.

“I think when you’re that technically gifted, you’ve got that much ability, you’ve got that much talent, he could play in any position and make the most of it. More importantly he’s got that aggression and he’s got that will to succeed and you’ve seen that.”

Trent earns Robertson praise

Robertson is absolutely right here. Given the chance, you’d back Trent to adapt to any position Klopp asked him to.

Even better, the England international would mould that position into his very own way of playing it. He’s arguably reinvented the whole right-back role while playing there already. In midfield, he’s a little more orthodox, but still brings his own trademark reading of the game.

Put him in at centre-back, on the wing or up-front, and you know he’ll find a way of playing there effectively.

It’s so rare to have a player like that in the squad, but Liverpool need to nail down exactly the best way to use Trent.

Perhaps it’s something no one is really discussing, but the Scouser’s contract is now at a crucial stage. With two years left to run on it, Liverpool need to start thinking about giving him a new one.

Given the enjoyment he clearly gets from playing in midfield, you would imagine that would play a part in the discussions. Alexander-Arnold might want assurances that Klopp is going to keep playing him in midfield. If Jurgen can’t give that, then perhaps somebody else will.

That isn’t something anybody wants to think about right now, but it is potentially a very real scenario. Having had his appetite whetted, Trent might not want to be shuttling up and down at right-back any longer. Something for the Reds to consider.
