Arsenal currently ahead of Liverpool in race to sign £50m PL player

Arsenal are currently seen as the most likely club to sign reported Liverpool target Romeo Lavia this summer.

Lavia could be about to leave Southampton, having been relegated to the Championship with Saints. With a price-tag of around £50m supposedly being slapped on him, the Belgian could help his club soften the financial blow of dropping to the second tier.

According to The Independent, there are a number of top sides interested in keeping Lavia in the Premier League.

Liverpool have previously been named as a potential suitor for the 19-year-old, and they are again here. So too are Chelsea – who tried to sign him last summer – and Manchester United.

But it’s Arsenal who are reportedly ready to trump their rivals. The Gunners are said to be planning a midfield of Declan Rice and Lavia next season. As a result, Mikel Arteta’s side are currently claimed to be seen as the club most likely to sign the Belgium international.

Talks are reportedly ‘not that advanced’ at this stage though, so things could still change.

Arsenal lead the way for Lavia, Liverpool in the mix

As Liverpool whittle down their list of midfield transfer targets, Lavia appears to have retained his place on it.

But, just as The Independent suggest, the teenager doesn’t seem to be an especially pressing option for the Reds.

Players like Khephren Thuram and Gabri Veiga in particular look like Liverpool’s primary targets right now. Similarly, the agents of Manu Kone and Ryan Gravenberch have also reportedly been sounded out.

Against that back-drop, it’s clear what kind of player Jurgen Klopp is actively looking at.

Those four players plus Lavia have an average age of just 21. Klopp obviously wants to target some of the best midfielders of the next generation and mould them together at Anfield.

As far as strategies go, it isn’t a bad one at all. After lighting up the Premier League as a teenager, Lavia certainly falls into that category.

With the transfer window now open, things can start to swing and change in different ways. Arsenal may be favourites now, but Liverpool were long-time front-runners to sign Jude Bellingham. This is football, anything can happen and the Reds are in the mix.
