Liverpool will only pursue a move for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia this summer if they feel it’s a deal the player himself wants above all else.
Lavia is being tracked by the Reds and a host of other Premier League sides ahead of the summer window officially opening in a few days’ time.
However, while Liverpool do want Lavia, the Reds are looking for some concrete guarantees from the player himself before making a move.
Liverpool want Romeo Lavia to show his allegiance
According to Football Insider’s David Lynch, Liverpool are putting plans together to potentially make a bid for Lavia.
However, it’s claimed that the Reds have no interest in a bidding war with the likes of Chelsea and Man United.
Instead, they want confirmation from Lavia that Liverpool is the only club he wants to join. From there, the Reds will then try to negotiate with Southampton to get a deal over the line.
Of course, for Lavia to make such a big call would be him showing his hand early on in this window.
Liverpool, then, could end up moving on quickly to other targets.
RTK’s View: Other names are out there
Look, we all know Romeo Lavia is a good player and in terms of up and coming talents in this country, there are few better.
But if this report is correct then it’s the right sort of stance for the Reds to take. They can’t afford to get drawn into this long processes of bidding for players who, in the end, might not fancy it anyway.
Playing for Liverpool needs to be more than just about money. A player needs to buy into the Anfield way and if Lavia isn’t willing to do that, then we move on quickly.
Of course, if a deal can be done, then great. But if there’s any doubt, then Klopp and the backroom team will simply move on.
