Liverpool have sent scouts to watch £25m Championship player

Liverpool won’t make a move to sign Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott after scouting him this season.

Scott has had a breakout season in the Championship, winning the division’s Young Player of the Year award. His eye-catching performances have led to suggestions that he could be playing Premier League football next season.

One of the sides linked with a move for the 19-year-old has been Liverpool. But writing on Twitter today, journalist Ben Jacobs reported that the Reds will not be in the race to sign Scott, despite watching him closely.

“Bristol City’s Alex Scott one to watch this summer, as revealed in January. Eight EPL clubs tracked him last season. Bristol City want £25m,” Jacobs wrote.

“Keep an eye on Wolves and Spurs in particular. West Ham and Bournemouth looking as well. LFC not in the race despite scouting Scott.”

As Liverpool search for the right players to add to their midfield this summer, it’s natural that they’ve taken a look at Scott. The teenager appears to be a Premier League player in the making.

But for their needs just at this moment, Scott is perhaps not quite the man they need.

Having lost a number of players over the summer, Jurgen Klopp needs a couple who can step straight into the Liverpool starting XI.

Alexis Mac Allister is someone who could do that. So too – potentially – is Khephren Thuram. But with the greatest respect, Scott isn’t.

Still very young, it wouldn’t be fair to bring him in and expect him to do a job straight away. For £25m though, a lot would still be expected of him.

For now then, it’s probably for the best that Liverpool keep an eye on Scott when he inevitably ends up at one of the clubs Jacobs mentions.

Should he do well there having made the step up, that’s when the Reds can make use of the dossier they’ve no doubt built on him. Until then though, it’s time to lock that file away.
