Newcastle United are weighing up a move for reported Liverpool target Khephren Thuram this summer.

Thuram appears to be one of Liverpool’s primary options in the market, with personal terms even said to have been agreed with the Frenchman. But according to The Telegraph, the Reds aren’t the only club interested.

They claim that along with Liverpool, Newcastle are ‘seriously considering’ a move for Thuram.

The Magpies are reportedly set to make an offer for Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha. But rather than as an alternative to Thuram, it’s claimed that Nmecha could still be in addition to the OGC Nice player.

That seemingly may depend on price, though. While the Wolfsburg man is said to be costing Newcastle £15m, Thuram could reportedly set them back ‘closer to £30m.’

Newcastle rival Reds in Thuram race

A year ago, Newcastle entering a bidding war with Liverpool for a player wouldn’t have been a worry. Although upwardly mobile and newly minted, the Toon Army weren’t even in Europe, let alone a Champions League side.

Liverpool meanwhile, were fresh from going as close as they possibly could from winning a quadruple, without actually doing it.

Fast forward 12 months and the tables have turned. Newcastle are now the Champions League side with bigger ambitions, while the Reds have dropped into Europe’s secondary competition.

As a result, rivalry from Eddie Howe’s team should now be taken very seriously indeed.

For our money, Liverpool obviously remains the bigger draw. But you can easily see why players would be attracted by a move to St James’ Park, too.

In Thuram’s case, only he will know what the right move for him is. But we still think the chance to become a key man in Liverpool’s midfield rebuild will trump anything Howe can offer right now.

It’s worth mentioning the figures being quoted here as well. Thuram has previously been reported as being worth in and around the £50-55m mark. If he’s really available for closer to £30m, Liverpool have got to push hard and blow Newcastle out of the water.
