Naby Keita has admitted that people may be wondering why he’s chosen to join Werder Bremen after leaving Liverpool.

An announcement was made yesterday that Keita will join the German side upon the expiry of his contract later this month. With news also filtering through that he’s set to take a massive pay-cut, it was a little bit of a surprise.

So, expanding on his decision in an interview with Werder’s official website, Naby sought to explain himself.

“I understand that many people are wondering why I am making the move from Liverpool FC to Werder Bremen,” said the Guinean. “When I spoke to the coach and the sporting director, they told me about the club’s project. After that, I thought about it a lot, with my family too.

“In the end, I had to make a decision and I chose Werder Bremen. I am very happy with this decision and will give everything to the team in the coming season.”

Keita explains Bremen decision

To be honest, it’s difficult to say why Keita’s move to Bremen is so much of a surprise. Having barely played for the Reds last season, he was never really going to land at a Champions League level club.

After being relegated in 2020/21, Bremen have also now re-established themselves as a Bundesliga side,

Having finished 13th in the table last season, they’ll look to kick on and climb higher during 2023/24. With Keita’s help they just might do that.

As we know all too well, the main thing will be getting the 28-year-old fit and on the pitch. Do that, and there’s a good chance he’ll show that he’s perhaps a level above his Bremen teammates.

Subsequently, if he can show his real potential, Keita could end up back on the radar of some ‘bigger’ clubs in a year’s time.

All-in-all then, it could end up being exactly the move that Liverpool’s outgoing No.8 needs right now.

As ever with former players, we’ll be watching on and hoping for his own personal success. Despite what some supporters will claim, Keita was a big part of Liverpool’s success over recent years, and we wish him all the best in Bremen.
