Outgoing Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has agreed to slash his salary by a massive 75 per cent.

There was a little bit of a surprise this afternoon. With his goodbye at Anfield just a few weeks old, liverpoolfc.com confirmed that Keita will join Werder Bremen upon the expiry of his Reds contract at the end of the month.

It looks like a semi-decent move for Naby. Back in German football where he thrived with RB Leipzig. And according to The Daily Mail, it also has the makings of a very good move for Bremen.

That’s because the Guinean has reportedly settled on taking just 25 per cent of his £120k-a-week salary at Liverpool.

Somewhat remarkably, Keita is said to have signed a three-year deal on these very terms. Astonishing from our soon-to-be-former No.8.

Keita finds himself a new club

This is a real surprise. It feels very much the kind of move Keita would have made on a short-term contract towards the end of the window, with options dwindling.

But, fair play to Naby, he must have been keen to get his foot back in the door somewhere and prove himself once again.

If he can do that, and return consistently to Bremen’s team, maybe this will end up being beneficial to all involved.

For Keita in that scenario, he could probably negotiate a higher paid deal. Perhaps that’s something that’s already been discussed with his news bosses.

Alternatively, do well and he may then attract interest from others sides. With two years then still to run on his deal, Bremen could end up getting a decent fee for him.

So, maybe this is actually a good thing. It will incentivise Keita to get himself in the best shape at the very least.

All that’s left now is for the 28-year-old to see out his contract with Liverpool and get ready for his move back to Germany. For one last time then, thanks for the memories Naby, all the best in Bremen.
