Reported Liverpool target Ruben Neves has already agreed personal terms on a move to Barcelona this summer.

Neves has been one of the players mentioned in connection with Liverpool’s midfield rebuild this off-season. However, Barca has always felt like the Wolves man’s preferred choice.

And now, as per journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, that choice has already been firmed up. In fact, Neves had reportedly sown things up with the Catalan’s as far back as April. Whether or not Barca can finalise the move though, is perhaps another matter.

“Ruben Neves is waiting and will wait for Barcelona. “Personal terms, agreed since the end of April with his agent Mendes,” Romano reports. Time to wait as Barca can’t proceed now due to FFP, not a priority for Xavi.”

With Xavi and Barcelona seemingly focused on other areas for now, perhaps there’s still scope for Liverpool to swoop in.

Neves opts for Barca move

Don’t get us wrong, Neves is a fine player. But we’re absolutely fine with this. Although he’d add quality to Liverpool’s midfield, there are much better options out there for the Reds right now.

With the signing of Alexis Mac Allister due to be wrapped up, it looks like Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram could soon be on the way, too. All three look like much more comfortable fits in Liverpool’s system than Neves.

Still, that hasn’t stopped the rumours from coming. As the 26-year-old finally looks set to leave Wolves, he’s been rumoured as a target for a number of top sides.

But as it can often be for Spanish, Portuguese and South American players, the lure of Barca has proved to be too strong.

For most of the last 20 years, we’d understand that. Even now, with Xavi at the helm, Barcelona do seem to be getting back to their old selves.

But the fact remains that their finances are a mess. With them making a push to re-sign Lionel Messi this summer, it remains to be seen whether they can actually make any new signings at all.

In that landscape, we can’t quite get our heads around any player wanting to join them right now. Especially in light of other interest. In Neves’ case, maybe he’ll yet to forced to climb down and accept another move. If that does happen though, it won’t be to Liverpool.
