Paul Merson has lauded Liverpool for making a move for Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
The World Cup winner is expected to leave The AMEX and reports today have claimed Mac Allister is close to signing for the Reds.
Nothing has been announced as yet, but there is a growing feeling the deal is done. And according to Merson, Liverpool are getting themselves a top player.

Paul Merson praises Alexis Mac Allister
Speaking on Sky Sports after news emerged of Liverpool edging closer to the deal, Merson praised the Reds for getting this one done.
Clearly a fan of Mac Allister, Merson claims Liverpool might even be getting their own Ilkay Gundogan.
“If Liverpool are going to challenge for the league as well as just the top four, for them to get Mac Allister would be a great signing. He’s a top player, a World Cup winner and was a massive influence in that tournament,” Merson said.
“He’s a very good player, a very calming influence on the pitch. He keeps the ball and ticks it along, and reminds me a bit of an Ilkay Gundogan without the goals.
“He’s a different kind of player to Jude Bellingham who they wanted before, Bellingham would get forward a bit more, but Mac Allister does the simple stuff very, very well. People might say, ‘Oh, the simple stuff?’ but there’s not a lot of players who can do that.”
RTK’s View: Quite the comparison
If Mac Allister can be half as good as Gundogan has been for City then we’ll be doing alright really.
The German has been one of the Premier League’s best ever buys. City paid just £20m for him as well, so the value for money is quite ridiculous.
With Mac Allister, he’ll bring his own element of quality to the table. He has shown his class for Argentina and Brighton and he’ll be hopeful of making the step to Liverpool with little fuss.
