Liverpool have enquired about the possibility of signing Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.
The Frenchman is set to enter the final year of his deal at Bayern and has already spoken of his desire for a new experience this summer. Now, according to Kicker, the first moves have been made to put that in motion.
They claim that after Pavard was spotted saying a potential goodbye to fans after last weekend’s 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig, interested clubs are now queuing up.
One of those is said to be Liverpool. The Reds are on the lookout for a new defender in the window. With that in mind, Kicker claim that they’ve been attracted to Pavard’s ability to play at centre-back and full-back.
They’re not the only ones, though. All of Inter Milan, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid have also reportedly made contact with Bayern over Pavard to differing degrees. Let the race commence.
Pavard looks the part for Liverpool
So far, most of the defenders linked to Liverpool have been young, up and coming players. The likes of Goncalo Inacio, Evan Ndicka and Josko Gvardiol have all been mentioned frequently.
However, maybe someone like Pavard would be a better addition at this stage. Having turned twenty-seven in March, the France World Cup winner is by no means old. He’d still be able to give a good few years to the cause in his prime.
As Kicker allude to, his versatility is something that Jurgen Klopp would really, really like. Pavard can pretty much play as a utility man across the defence, or even in midfield. Former Bayern coach Niko Kovac previously described the defender as being ‘world-class’ [Buli News] and he probably is.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s new midfield role in mind, someone like Pavard might well be the perfect fit as a one-size-fits all squad option.
As a result of his diminishing contract, he should be get-able at a reasonable price from Bayern. Having done deals in recent windows, Liverpool also seemingly have a good relationship with the Germans.
Obviously, the flip-side to that is that Pavard would likely want big wages. Now without the allure of Champions League football, the Reds may also find it difficult to compete with the other clubs mentioned in this report.
Nevertheless, we still think Pavard is someone Liverpool should pursue. It isn’t every day a unique player like him becomes available, and the Reds should do their best not to pass him up.
