Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says he’d be ‘delighted’ if Jurgen Klopp signed both Alexis Mac Allister and Mason Mount this summer.
The midfield pair are reportedly Liverpool’s top priorities heading into the upcoming transfer market. And speaking to The Anfield Wrap, Carragher has given his stamp of approval to both potential signings.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Mac Allister. He seems to be the one everyone’s talking about now,” said the pundit. “He’s a World Cup winner. He plays that sort of hybrid role in midfield, sometimes you see him sitting, sometimes he’s playing as one of the false nines if you like, the way Brighton play. I think he could definitely do that position [for Liverpool], I think Mason Mount could as well.
“Mount’s a funny one in that people always seem a little bit down on him for whatever reason. I’ve never got it, I’m a huge fan. He’s a Champions League winner, I really like him. He’s got energy to press, he’d probably provide a greater goal threat from midfield than we have with Jordan [Henderson] in that position right now. He works hard, every top manager who’s been in at Chelsea’s picked him, plays for England.
“If we brought Mac Allister and Mason Mount in I’d be delighted in that.”
Carragher urges Liverpool to make triple signing
As things stand, Carragher looks like heaving a very good chance of his wish coming true. Deals appear to be progressing for both Mac Allister and Mount. The Brighton man’s move in particular seems like being just a matter of time.
Getting those two through the door would be a tremendous start to Liverpool’s summer business. However, like a lot of Reds supporters, Carra also thinks the Reds may need to do even more in the market.
“I definitely want us to bring a defensive midfield player in as well,” said the 45-year-old. “Those two players I’m describing are probably more offensive midfield players, Mac Allister and Mount. I don’t think our problem’s going forward, our problem’s defensively.
“If we want to get back to where we want to be, which is challenging Man City, challenging for big trophies, we’ve got to sort ourselves out defensively because that’s been the biggest problem this season.”
You won’t find any complaints here, Jamie. If Liverpool truly want this summer to be a midfield revamp, boxing off the defensive midfield position should be a priority.
Fabinho has shown in the latter part of the season that he definitely does still have life in him yet. But at the very least, the 29-year-old needs some help.
Young Stefan Bajcetic could provide that, although the 18-year-old looked very at home when given license to get forward in an ‘8’ role, too. So, ideally, a new specialist is brought in to help Fab cope with the workload.
Maybe that could be the much-linked Manuel Ugarte, maybe it could be someone else. But Liverpool have to be on the lookout.
