Jurrien Timber teases at Ajax stay despite transfer links to Liverpool

Jurrien Timber has teased that he could stay at Ajax this summer despite being subject to offers and interest over the last 12 months, with Liverpool linked with the defender.

Speaking on Ziggo Sports via Football Transfers, the Dutch international hinted that he could remain in Amsterdam this summer depending on what club makes an approach for him, with Timber speaking out in recent weeks over his Ajax future.

90min recently claimed that Liverpool are one of the clubs chasing Timber, who at £44m could be viewed as quite the coup given his age and experience for Ajax in both the Eredivisie and the UEFA Champions League, yet the defender teased that a move might not even happen this summer.

Timber said when asked about his Ajax future and if he could leave the club in the transfer window: “Of course, we didn’t perform well this season, and that’s why I’m not shouting that I want to leave. I said ‘no’ to really big clubs last season. So I never feel like it’s time to go.

“But, you don’t know what next season will be like. Things were said to me at the beginning of the season that didn’t come true this season. I don’t know what it will be like next season either, so staying at Ajax this summer is not ruled out, no.”

Liverpool are likely to spend big on a defender this summer once their midfield rebuild is complete, and adding Timber to their ranks could be massive should the 21-year-old decide to leave Ajax this summer, despite the youngster’s latest comments.

The Dutch international is capable of playing numerous defensive positions and will join Anfield with relationships with Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk, and at £44m, Liverpool will find it hard to identify another centre-back as good and as young for the value than Timber.
