Danny Murphy says Liverpool have had three players who are just so rare recently

Danny Murphy has hailed the durability of Liverpool’s famous attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Having lost Mane last year, Liverpool fans are now having to face the reality that Firmino is set to depart, too. And as he gears up to play his final game at Anfield tomorrow, BBC Sport have put together a nice tribute to the Brazilian.

As part of that, former Reds midfielder Murphy has weighed in, praising the influence of Bobby and his fellow legendary forwards.

“Out of the three, Firmino was probably the least productive in terms of goals, but I don’t think he’s ever been under-rated,” said the 46-year-old.

“When you talk about that famous Liverpool front three, people see them as a collective for what they all did in those seasons they had together. It’s very unusual to get a trio who had the durability that Firmino, Mane and Salah had for so long.”

And then there was one

Without question, the trio of Mane, Salah and Firmino is one of Liverpool’s greatest of all time. Over the space of five years together they won everything they possibly could with the Reds.

At times, it felt like a possiblity that all three could stay at Anfield even until retirement. Such was their ability to play almost every game and maintain the same, or similar standards.

But with Mane becoming the first to look for a new challenge with Bayern Munich last year, that illusion was broken.

And now, with Bobby set to join him as an ex-Liverpool player, only Salah will remain going into 2023/24. For some fans, that will seem logical. From the outside looking in perhaps Mo was always the main man of the group.

However, although he was certainly the main goal scorer, both Firmino and Mane could also claim to be the central focus at different times. That’s what made them so good.

Mane arguably actually outperformed Salah in Liverpool’s two most successful seasons – 2018/19 and 2019/20. If not in goals then in sheer importance to the team. Meanwhile, Firmino has always been the oil that has kept the other two purring along mechanically.

During their years at Liverpool together, these three lads from different corners of the globe all found a perfect home at Anfield. Their legacy is already one of immense success, frightening durability and of course, goals.

One day Mo will join the other two and leave the club he’s become an icon at. From that dreaded day onwards, their legacy will only grow.
